2) Book Review: The Millionaire Next Door by Stanley and Danko

The authors have been conducting research on wealthy people for decades.
This book describes what people worth over one million dollars are like
via statistics. The book is an easy read but it has a lot of numbers. A
couple times my eyes started to glaze over but it only lasted for a page.

The book notes many people with a large income spend most of or more than
their income allows. There are also many people who do not have a high
income but a high net worth.

A central theme is that people who spend less than they make accumulate
money but the book is about more than that. There are some anecdotes and
you could find some advice but it is not a "how to get rich" book.

The book talks about things like how many first generation immigrants to
the USA work hard and save up so their children can go to school and do
well. Interestingly in spite of their parent's desire these children often
become caught up in the consumption society they grow up in. They end up
spending for appearance and require support from their parents.

The book mentions that most small businesses go under but most millionaires
own their own business and do not work for other people. There is no magic
set of professions to be a member of.

I found it interesting and I would recommend it but don't expect a list of
personal finance rules.
